Curtains for a Toddler’s Room

Posted on | July 7, 2010 | 10 Comments

I finally got a chance to sew up these super easy curtains on Saturday.

The fabric is a Michael Miller print with dump trucks and orange cones and all sorts of construction equipment. I didn’t line them.  I wanted something simple an fun.  And, I’m going to be sewing dark blue roman blinds for the windows, to replace those light blinds.

These were very simple – side hems, 4 inch bottom hem, and no casing at the top, because I chose to use clips instead.

Summer Dress

I’m almost done!  Making a dress (Vogue, not sure of the # at the moment).  I had to take it in a bit at the zipper seam, and I just decided to hand-pick the zipper for a cleaner look.  Next, I have to finish the inside hand-sewing and then hem.  Almost there …

Painting the First Floor …

I haven’t been sewing as much lately, because we’ve been working on quite a few projects around the house. I HAD to finish them before this weekend, because we were hosting our monthly potluck, and I didn’t want the house to be a construction zone with paint fumes.

I painted the living room (Sherwin Williams Softened Green) and the dining room (Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray and Extra White).

We had a custom-built bookcase installed in the living room, along with crown molding.

Here is the dining room, looking into the kitchen and living room.  I painted the one short wall of the dining room in the green shade to match the living room.  After I finish painting the bookcase and trim, my next painting project will be the kitchen.

We still have to have the crown molding installed in the dining room:

The dining room houses my antique sewing machine. It works, but it’s not too practical to use, so I just use it for decoration:

And we built (with some family help) a pergola in our backyard to grow hops. We plan on putting pavers underneath it, for a nice shaded area in our very bright backyard.

Lots of Stuff …

I’ve been super busy.  The house updating has pulled me away from my sewing machine, but I’m 95% done a summer dress, and I have so much to sew next week.

I’ll also be posting pictures of living room and dining room soon.  I’ve been sanding and painting …

10 reasons why I am a horrible seamstress/sewer

  1. I don’t make muslins.
  2. I don’t trace my patterns (I know!!  I plan on changing, with my next purchased pattern.)
  3. I don’t tissue fit.
  4. If I can’t find my marking pencils, sometimes I use a pen. I know, I’m awful.
  5. I don’t oil my machine enough.
  6. Sometimes I sew over pins.  And I put them in my mouth.
  7. My scissors are in desperate need of sharpening.
  8. My cutting table is covered in who-knows-what so I use the floor instead.
  9. I can’t ever remember the type of needle to use for different fabrics, and I always have to look it up.  Or just go with what’s in my machine at the time.
  10. I have 15 unfinished projects, partially cut out or sewn, on my sewing table right now, and I’m not sure why I can’t manage to finish them.

Really, enough procrastination …

This past week I was distracted by this beautiful addition to our home:

My living room was temporarily in my dining room, which threw everything else into disarray, and of course I have not had any chance to sew since. Well, I spent 1 hour cutting out a new dress.  I guess that counts.

Then, we were down 1 adult this week, so there was definitely no chance to get any sewing done.

But isn’t it beautiful?!  Add this room to my list of things to do – I have to paint the walls and paint the bookcase.  It’s going to be a huge job.
